Biography

Mikko Tarmia

Mikko Tarmia was born 1978 in Mikkeli, a small and beautiful town in Eastern Finland. At the beginning of the 90s he copied Pro Tracker from his friend and made his first tunes with it. It was nothing you could listen with joy, but he was learning all the time. He started it with electronic music and soon he had a big pile of different sizes and types of music equipment filling his room.

Later at 90s Mikko started to receive more and more influences from orchestral music and he also got interested in playing different instruments. After taking lessons with few instruments for couple of years, he applied for a local music institute to get some formal music education. Beside studying bassoon playing and music theory, he also performed in numerous events with different ensembles. During this time he also had his first game and film projects.

At 2002 Mikko composed orchestral music for his first computer game project, Codeblender Software's submarine action game called DeepTrouble. Mikko also produced music for other Codeblender titles such as Epsilon Tahari: Reign of the Machines, Rally Shift and Deep Trouble 2.

At 2006 Mikko was asked to compose some music for Penumbra, a technical demo for survival horror game developed by Frictional Games. Penumbra gained massive popularity in internet and Frictional Games decided to make Penumbra a commercial game. Penumbra: Overture was going to be released in episodes and Mikko was commissioned to compose all the music for them. Penumbra: Overture - Episode One was released march 2007 and in addition to SDSI award, it received good reviews in media. Paradox Interactive published Penumbra's final chapter, titled Penumbra: Black Plague, worldwide at february 2008. Also Black Plague has received critical success - even better than the Episode One. Penumbra: Requiem is an expansion for the Black Plague and will be available Q3/2008 as a digital download only.

Mikko has also been an active member of Kooma films, an amateur movie makers society focused in producing comedy films, mainly parodies. Mikko has produced music for two of their latest productions, Juhannus and Matkalla Hollywoodiin which have been showing occasionally in cable channel Diggari.

At the moment Mikko is reaching for his bachelor's degree in Pirkanmaa University of Applied Sciences where he is studying digital music production.
